Smokey is the mascot for the University of Tennessee's sports teams, known as "The Volunteers" or "the Vols." The mascot features both a live Bluetick Coonhound, Smokey XI, and a costumed version. Smokey XI has been leading the team onto the field since the 2022 NCAA football season, under the care of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. The costumed Smokey also appears at all Vols games and has won several mascot championships.
After a scoreless first quarter of play, Baylor scored on a 12-yard scoring pass from quarterback Bobby Jones to Jerry Marcontell to take a 6–0 lead. The score was set up by Del Shofner's 54-yard run. In the third stanza, quarterback Johnny Majors scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to put Tennessee on top at 7–6. In the fourth quarter, Buddy Humphrey's one-yard touchdown run gave Baylor a 13–7 advantage. Baylor's defense provided the difference as they didn't allow any more points.
The 1956 Tennessee Volunteers football team represented the University of Tennessee in the 1956 college football season. Playing as a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the team was led by head coach Bowden Wyatt, in his second year, and played their home games at Shields–Watkins Field in Knoxville, Tennessee. They finished the season with a record of ten wins and one loss as SEC Champions, and with a loss against Baylor in the Sugar Bowl.
